An animal habitat is the environment that an animal lives in.
Wellington Zoo is providing more naturalistic environments for its animals, in line with changing attitudes at modern zoos around the world. There have been extensive re-developments of enclosures over the last 20 years, some recent re-developments include:
African Savannah
A mixed species exhibit where giraffes, zebras, ostriches and antelope all live together.
The cornerstone of the African Savannah is the giraffe house. The house has been built using sustainable materials where possible and a rainwater recovery system has been installed to use for cleaning of the giraffe house.
The giraffe house has been designed for visitors to see behind the scenes as they walk up the internal raised walkway, and the viewing deck over the exhibit will give them the chance to come face to face with the giraffes.
Three Themes at Wellington Zoo
Wellington Zoo has a commitment to conservation, and plans to develop three themes to promote the need for sustainable use of New Zealand's natural resources with a balance between humans and nature.
This conservation theme will explain the effects on wildlife evolving in isolation, using New Zealand, Australia and Madagascar as examples. Read more...
This conservation theme will show how animals and plants depend on each other for survival. Read more...
