One of the most valuable things that anyone can donate to Wellington Zoo is their time. The Zoo wouldn’t survive without our dedicated and generous volunteer force.
Volunteering gives you an opportunity to share your interest in wildlife and conservation with visitors to the Zoo; most volunteer work is centred on people not animals.
Volunteers work in all areas of the Zoo including supporting zoo keepers, assisting with administration and maintenance and helping out at fun events and activities.
To volunteer you have to be at least 18; unfortunately we cannot accommodate younger volunteers at this stage. Our ideal volunteer is a good communicator with a strong customer focus, who is courteous, cheerful and reliable. We also ask that you commit to at least two days a month.
‘I love that no two days are ever the same, and that I’m working outside after a week in an office. I love working with people who care as much about animals as I do.’
Jo, 45, Wellington Zoo volunteer for two months.
‘Of all the tasks I get to do helping at the cheetah encounters is top of my list. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of being around such beautiful animals. It’s a real privilege.’
Delwyn, 36, Wellington Zoo Volunteer for two years.
Corporate volunteering
Get out in the fresh air and get your hands dirty.
Volunteering at Wellington Zoo is a great opportunity for you and your colleagues to contribute to your community. It is also an ideal team building exercise – good for re-energising employees and increasing morale.
We mostly need help with outdoor tasks, such as spreading bark mulch, weeding and planting projects, although we will look at activities suited to the interests and skill set of your team.
