Wellington Zoo Treats Visually Impaired Children to Behind the Scenes
19 October 2005
Four Vodafone Wellington Lions Rugby players and a behind the scenes tour proved to be a day to remember for a group of children from the Royal Foundation of the Blind late last month.
Visiting Wellington Zoo on 29 September, the group experienced a Wildlife Encounter in the Zoos Living Room before heading off into the animal kingdom to go behind the scenes at the Lion enclosure.
It was really great to see the look on the childrens faces when the birds flew overhead and the wind from their wings fluffed up the kids hair, says Wellington Zoo Assistant Animal Trainer, Annemieke Timmermans.
Trekking up-hill to the Lion enclosure was no problem for this energetic bunch of children who knew they were in for a treat.
As if going behind the scenes at the Lion enclosure wasnt enough of a highlight, each child and all four Lions players experienced feeding the Lions a strip of beef each.
Most of the kids were really keen to feed the Lions, but it was quite funny that the Lions players needed a bit of coercion, says Wellington Zoo Keeper, Paul Horton.
Visitors to Wellington Zoo also got an unexpected surprise when the Lions players put on a popular signing session outside the Lion enclosure.
