Public Zoo exhibition opens at Museum of Wellington City and Sea
19 December 2006
An exhibition celebrating the first 100 years of Wellington Zoo has opened at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea.
In collaboration with Wellington Zoo, and made possible by a generous grant from the Community Trust of Wellington, the Museum of Wellington City and Sea celebrates 100 years of Wellington Zoo with the exhibition Public Zoo. Public Zoo celebrates the first 100 years of the Zoo's history with contemporary photographs and film alongside historical artefacts and evocative images of the Zoo's past. The exhibition leads visitors from the entertainment of chimp tea-parties and elephant rides to today's focus on education, conservation and fun. Featured are highlights from 100 years of Wellington Zoo, as well as exploration of animal behaviour, enrichment and awareness. "This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the Zoo's history and how we perceive and relate to other animals. The contemporary art, archival objects and interactive elements all add to the themes we are exploring such as perception and awareness,"said David Waller, Exhibitions Manager at the Museum. "We also wanted to create a space that fitted the Zoo experience and people's memories of it. So we created a space that suggests a summer holiday. It's like a day out at the Zoo," said David. Public Zoo is on at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea from 19 December 2006 until 13 May 2007. Centenary celebrations at Wellington Zoo run until 4 March 2007.
