Red panda cub named

26 March 2008

Over Easter we asked visitors to the Zoo to help us choose a name for our new male red panda cub. We selected four names that reflect the origin of the red pandas that are native to mountainous areas of Asia, including the Himalayas.

Ed Choices were Aadi which means first or most important; Ed after Sir Edmund Hillary, Oja which means glow, and Nawal which means new, after counting up the votes the winner is Ed after Sir Edmund Hillary. Ed is a healthy three month old cub and weighs around 600 grams. He is still pretty shy, but he should soon start venturing out of the nest box more and more as he becomes more confident and wants to explore his home. Check out Ed on The Dominion Post website http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominionpost/4459976a6479.html
