Pub Charity boosts Zoo amphitheatre fund

4 July 2006

Pub Charity have given Wellington Zoo $500,000 for the development of their new amphitheatre.

On June 22 2006, Pub Charity CEO Greg Roberts handed over a $500,000 cheque to Wellington Zoo Trust Chair Neale Pitches and Mayor Kerry Prendergast to be used as part of the Zoo's re-development. "We are excited that Pub Charity can contribute to Wellington Zoo's development programme for the amphitheatre project," Pub Charity CEO Greg Roberts said. "We are proud to support the Zoo, it is an important part of the greater Wellington community and believe that all Zoo visitors, and Wellingtonians in general will benefit from the amphitheatre." "As a direct outcome of this generous donation from Pub Charity Wellington Zoo Trust will be able to build an amphitheatre that is crucial to our goal of becoming a magical place of learning and fun," Zoo Trust Board Chair Neale Pitches said. "The amphitheatre will allow us to showcase our education and conservation programmes regardless of the weather and to educate and inspire the more than 80,000 young people and 170,000 visitors to the Zoo," "The Zoo has been a Wellington institution for the last 100 years and recently Richard Taylor, the inspirational head of Weta Workshop, described the Zoo as a unique place in Wellington City where children and families can get beyond the TV screen and tangibly experience the wonderful world of exotic and native animals that exists there."  Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast thanked Pub Charity for their support which allows the first crucial steps in the Zoo's redevelopment to start. "The new amphitheatre, chimpanzee enclosure, a mixed African exhibit, and the new hospital are the first steps in this development and the city thanks Pub Charity for their support of the amphitheatre," she said. Wellington City Council has made an in principle decision to financially support the Zoo's capital development programme.
