IUCN:  Least Concern

  • The serval has a very long neck and very long legs to help it find prey in long African grass.  It has unusually large ears and extremely good hearing.
  • Servals are solitary animals and very territorial.  It will mark its territory with urine, and will stay there for many years.
  • Servals are one of the few cats with both spots and stripes.
  • The serval can be very swift over short distances, with a bounding run, and can leap up to three metres in the air to catch birds. They can climb well but will only climb to take refuge in trees if threatened by large predators.
  • Servals are one of about 30 species of small cat.
  • The serval has the longest legs in the cat family in relation to its overall body size.
  • Servals are good swimmers.
