Casual Educator

Share the learning and the fun through the delivery of high quality learning programmes at Wellington Zoo.

At Wellington Zoo we celebrate our living world and want people to love animals and care about the wild places they come from. We aim to create an understanding that we are all connected by nature, and to use this to excite and inspire people to take positive action to protect the environment.

We are looking for Casual Educators to help create this excitement and encourage children to make their personal connection with nature. The main role of a Casual Educator is supporting the delivery of our School Holiday Programme, but may also involve delivering other programmes, such as our school visits and Sleepovers.

Working hours will be rostered for each holiday programme, which run for two weeks between 8am and 4.30pm, Monday – Friday in the October, January, April, and July school holidays. Other work will vary and be negotiated throughout the term between the Casual Educator and the Learning Manager.

Outdoor work is a major part of the job and a moderate level of fitness is required. Candidates must have the legal right to work in New Zealand, and if selected will be required to undergo a police background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol check.

Successful candidates will have a proven interest in conservation and wildlife, strong inter-personal skills, be customer focussed, and love working with children.  Ideally they will have relevant experience working with children in an education environment. Training will be provided for successful candidates.

To apply for this great opportunity, please email your covering letter, CV, and completed application form to or post to Casual Educator Vacancy, c/- Wellington Zoo Trust, 200 Daniell Street, Newtown, Wellington 6021.

Do you want to be a zoo keeper?

A zoo keeper needs to be dedicated, have a keen interest in animals, be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all weather. Zoo keepers need to be practical, observant and have good communication skills, with an ability to relate to people as well as animals.

To become a Zookeeper at Wellington Zoo, you must have completed the National Certificate in Captive Wild Animals from Unitec in Auckland. This is a zoo-based qualification and directly relevant to zoo work. Other qualifications, or parts of them, may be recognised as equivalent to some parts of the course.
