So, you want to be a zoo keeper?

A zoo keeper needs to be dedicated, have a deep interest in animals, be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all weathers. Zoo keepers need to be practical, observant and have good communication skills, with an ability to relate both to animals and people.

What qualifications and experience do you need?
Science, biology, English and maths are useful subjects and it's best to start planning early, while still at school, as it is a very competitive job market.

Talk to your school's careers adviser about work experience programmes or opportunities at your local zoo, veterinary clinic, SPCA or Department of Conservation so you can gain valuable practical experience. Volunteering at a zoo will give you a better idea of what the job is really about and allow you to make an informed decision as to whether you want to pursue this career.

If you want a job as a zoo keeper at Wellington Zoo, you must have the National Certificate in Captive Wild Animals from Unitec in Auckland. This is a zoo-based qualification and directly relevant to zoo work. Other qualifications, or parts of them, may be recognised as equivalent to some parts of the course.

On the career path
Be aware that there are only a small number of zoos in New Zealand and a limited number of jobs available. For every vacancy there are often more than 100 applicants, most with tertiary degrees and some with overseas zoo experience.

New Zealand keepers should broaden their experience and work overseas if they want to become a senior keeper or a curator.
