Conservation - what can you do?

'Saving the planet' is a huge job and sometimes can seem overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you start? Can you make a difference?

Yes, you can, no matter how small your effort. To start, you can;

  • re-use - whatever you can. If you can't, take it to a depot where other people can take it away for re-use.
  • reduce - cut back any unnecessary consumption
  • recycle - cans and tins, plastic, paper and cardboard.

Here is a list of simple things you can do to help. Try and do at least 2 every day
1. Turn off lights and electrical appliances if you are not using them.
2. Turn off the tap while you clean your teeth.
3. Do not accept plastic bags with every single purchase.
4. Walk or cycle to school or work, or take public transport as often as possible.
5. Buy products with the least amount of packaging or with packaging that can be recycled.
6. Think about the products you buy, and ask:
   - has the timber been plantation grown?
   - will use of this product harm the environment air, soil, waterways or the sea?
   - what will happen to the environment when I dispose of this product?
7. Service your car regularly and encourage others to do so.
8. Make sure you don't pollute storm water drains - put paint, oil and other pollutants into sealed tins and take them to a depot.
9. Never buy products that have been made from endangered animals or plants.
